Studying in Darmstadt

Living in Darmstadt

Exchange students have the opportunity to get a room from the Studentenwerk (student union). The closest „Wohnheime“ (residential student accommodation) to the Lichtwiese are the ones in the Niederrahmstädter Straße and the Lichtwiesenweg.

The notorious Karlshof is a high-rise apartment complex inside the city and also residential accommodation for students. It‘s a very vivid place with a great mixture of foreign students. Information about student accommodation can be found at Studentenwerk Darmstadt .

Nice residential areas are the Martins- and the Johannesviertel with its old buildings from the early 1900. Their rents are a little bit higher than rooms in student residentials.

The best way to find a room is checking the internet and the newspapers. Every Wednesday and Saturday the local newspaper (Darmstädter Echo) provides advertisements. Call early and make an appointment!

Many students who look for new flatmates advertise on flyers in the architecture building. There one can find a great variety. Just take the telephone number and call.

It‘s difficult to find a room during September till October just before winter semester starts. This is when all the new students move to Darmstadt and also look for accommodation.

A monthly rent in Darmstadt ranges from 150 Euro to 300 Euro. Generally speaking one should count 500 to 600 Euro for living per month.

Getting around

In Darmstadt everything can be done walking, by bike or by using means of public transportation. Having your own car is not necessary.
Within the Semester-Fees is included your semester-ticket, which is valid in the whole of the RMV-Service Area and also the transition areas to the Rhine-Neckar-Service Areas.
Withing the RMV-Service Area generally all buses, trams, underground- and s-train services and also the local services (RegionalTrain[RB], cityTrain[SE], RegionalExpress[RE]) are open to use. Special services such as the night-bus in Frankfurt or HEAGs AIRLiner, are subject to surcharges.

Additional information about the semester-ticket can be found at the AStA in Darmstadt.

Nightlife in Darmstadt

The favoured party night in Darmstadt is Thursday night. This is due to the fact that most students go home on the weekends, therefore there‘s not much nightlife on Friday and Saturday … except in the Karlshof, there is always something going on.

Typical student meeting places are the „Schlosskeller“, the 603m² (formerly known as Stöffler-Halle), the „Hüttchen“ (best known for sports parties), Stella and much more.

Highlights of the architecture parties (which are known all through Darmstadt) are the 1+3 party for the new students in first semester, the 2+4 party and the diploma party. All of them take place in the Kuhle and on the Gallery and it‘s always a great happening.

University Sports in Darmstadt

After long hours in front of the computer with tense necks and aching backs it‘s good to have the possibility to get in shape. This possibility can also be found at the Lichtwiese.
One of the students’ favourites is the Hochschulbad (outside pool) which can be used for free by students. The water is very (!) refreshing.

The landscape invites to go jogging. For those who don‘t like running alone is the „Lauftreff“ a spot where people meet frequently to go running together.

Very attractive is the sports offer from the „Hochschulsport“. The program ranges from Aerobics to Yoga and contains a great variety of different dance groups, ball sports, martial arts and special back training courses. Almost all of the courses are exempt from charges.
