Center of Excellence for the Resilient City

Newly founded at the Department of Architecture

2025/12/09

In October 2025, the Center of Excellence for the Resilient City was established at the Department of Architecture by the disciplines of the Urban Design and Urban Planning research group (FG Stadt). The aim of the new center is to consolidate, highlight, and further develop research on the specific contributions of architecture, urban design, and landscape architecture to urban resilience.

The focus lies in particular on the design- and spatial-based dimension of resilience measures: How can different building blocks of resilient adaptation be integrated into coherent, comprehensive spatial concepts? Architectural and landscape architectural design serves as a research-driven strategy to develop integrated solutions that not only meet functional requirements but also address emotional aspects, countering, for example, fears of crises with a sense of safety and security.

Another key mission of the Center of Excellence is the promotion of early-career researchers. Doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers—especially within the framework of the URBANGrad Graduate School—benefit from a wide range of opportunities, including open research workshops, collegial discussions, individual consultation, and mentoring. The goal is to support young researchers in their academic and professional development while creating a productive, interdisciplinary environment.
