Second Skin: Textiles as Space-Forming Material
2026/04/22
From 7 to 10 April 2026, TU Darmstadt hosted the interdisciplinary project week Projekt.EINS under the theme “Second Skin”. Around 197 students from the departments of Architecture, Physics, and Human Sciences worked together in 20 groups of approximately ten participants each, creating large-format textile installations. The week was organised by the Department of Design and Spatial Design under the direction of Prof. Dipl.-Ing. ETH Johanna Meyer-Grohbrügge.
At the heart of the brief were textiles as a design and meaning-bearing material. The starting point was second-hand fabric brought in by the students themselves. Through techniques such as cutting, folding, layering, sewing, and weaving, large-format textile collages emerged that engaged critically with social, ecological, or cultural themes. The spatial context was provided by the courtyard surrounding the Außenkuhle at TU Darmstadt.
The project week was structured into four consecutive phases: on the first day, the focus was on team building – groups developed initial ideas through sketches at a scale of 1:10, which were then presented and discussed during a specialist review. On the second day, each group refined its concept and produced a prototype in a 30 × 30 cm section. The third day was dedicated to producing the large-format textile in the final 300 × 300 cm format. On the final day, the works were hung in the Außenkuhle, digitally documented, and publicly presented as part of a reviewed exhibition. Awards were given for sustainability, social relevance, innovation, and a audience prize.
About the Project Week
The interdisciplinary project week Projekt.EINS was established at the Department of Architecture in 2013 and has been led by the Department of Design and Spatial Design since 2015. It is aimed at students in the early stages of their studies and follows the guiding principle of “competence development through interdisciplinary collaboration from the very beginning”. The Centre for Academic and Higher Education Development supports the project week with the aim of fostering student engagement and cross-disciplinary collaboration at TU Darmstadt.
