“The 15-Minute City” Launches at TU Darmstadt

International Summer Workshop at the Urban Design and Planning Institute Receives Book Donation

2026/05/11

From 19 to 23 May 2026, the Department of Architecture at TU Darmstadt will host the international summer workshop “The 15-Minute City.” During this five-day intensive seminar, students from three countries will jointly explore the concept of the 15-minute city as a tool for transforming contemporary urban environments.

In addition to students from the Department of Architecture, participants will include students from the Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center (WAAC) at Virginia Tech School of Architecture and from the Universidad del Desarrollo in Santiago de Chile. The workshop centres on a collaborative analysis of case studies on transit-oriented urban development in the Rhine-Main region. International teams will visit and map selected sites and develop solution approaches in the spirit of the 15-minute city. The workshop aims to stimulate critical debate and sharpen diverse theoretical and practical perspectives through exchange between students and faculty from different continents. The workshop is led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Knöll and Dr.-Ing. Marianne Halblaub Miranda from the Institute for Urban Design and Planning. A concluding debriefing session will take place on 30 June 2026 via Zoom, and the workshop results will subsequently be presented in a dedicated publication.

In connection with the workshop, the Institute would like to express its sincere gratitude for a generous book donation from a student of the Department of Architecture. Having learned about the seminar in 2025, the student provided 30 copies of the book The 15-Minute City, which were distributed to participants at the start of the seminar.
