„Organizing Architectures“ – Excursion to Belgium and the Netherlands
26.02.2026
The interdisciplinary Research Training Group „Organizing Architectures“ focuses on studies that address the tension between architectural production and social processes. „How do built or planned structures shape (public) spaces and social dynamics? How do social processes and discourses materialize in architecture? And how does this then impact society?“. To this end, researchers refer to materials produced by architects and urban planners over the years. The materiality of the architectural process as well as the critical analysis of these productions are part of the group's various research processes.
Aiming to broaden horizons, on February 17 and 18, the RTG team visited two architecture research and archiving institutions: the Flanders Architecture Institute (VAi) in Antwerpen, and the Nieuwe Instituut – Museum for Architecture, Design and Digital Culture in Rotterdam. During the visit, new perspectives in publications, workshops, and exhibitions on topics related to architecture were presented to doctoral students, postdocs, and PIs. Visits to the institutions' archives and libraries enriched the trip. In addition, fruitful discussions between hosts and visitors sought to broaden horizons on materials and formats in architecture and urbanism research.
