The seminar “Plangraphic Truths – What the Prompt?” focuses in a theoretical way on the use of text-to-image generators in architectural visualization.

Text-to-image generators are programs that use artificial intelligence to create digital images from a textual description – the so-called prompt.

Based on examinating texts regarding the topic of architectural visualization, image production and artificial intelligence, already completed designs by the seminar participants will be visualized again using text-to-image generators such as “Dall-E” 2, “Midjourney” or “Stable Diffusion”.

Using several iterative visualizations in different text-to-image generators, the relationship between the original design, the input text (“prompt”) and the images generated from it will be explored in a playful and experimental way.

Together with students, the handling of the text-to-image generators will be tested and the limits and problem areas of this technique will be examined and reflected upon by means of direct application.

The question of whether and how text-to-image generators can be meaningfully used in architectural visualization will be critically discussed and presented in the seminar.

The seminar pursues a consciously experimental method in order to approach the new but not unproblematic technology and to examine its use in architectural representation.

The use of artificial intelligence in the design process is definitely not the subject of this seminar.

The focus on the pure representation of an existing design is also intended to provide students with the necessary time to deal extensively with the above-mentioned questions and to examine them in direct application.

Basic knowledge of proportion, perspective and composition will be deepened by means of nude models. Visual perception of physiognomy, posture and movement as essential attributes of the human body will be trained.

With an independent choice of tools like pencil, ink, colour students should interpret their own perception and express it individually.

submission deadline:
August 6th, 2024, 9.30 – 11.00 am, Kleiner Zeichensaal (r111)
