Hauke Horn is an architect, cultural scientist and energy consultant working in the intersections of architectural history, sustainability and communication theory. In the summer semester of 2023, he will be substituting his professorship at the Department of "Architectural Theory and Science" under the motto "Reusing and Continuing to Build" in accordance with his focal points: sustainable architectural transformation processes that contribute to a circular building culture just as much as they preserve the history and identity of places as material testimonies.

For Hauke Horn, this is already the third time he has been at the TU Darmstadt: not only did he previously work here as a research assistant at the Department of Architecture and Art History, but he also completed his diploma with an interdisciplinary freelance thesis on the interface between energy-efficient building and architectural theory, which was jointly supervised at the time by Prof. Manfred Hegger and Prof. Werner Durth.

Hauke Horn has also worked scientifically beyond Darmstadt: In the last 15 years he has taught and researched at universities and colleges in Braunschweig, Kaiserslautern and Mainz, as well as in Strasbourg and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. This resulted in his highly acclaimed dissertations on the "Tradition of Place" (Dr. phil., Mainz 2012, summa cum laude) and "Memories Written in Stone" (Dr.-Ing., Braunschweig 2015, summa cum laude), which were awarded the Dalberg Prize for Transdisciplinary Research of the Academy of Applied Science in Erfurt and the internationally renowned Romanesque Research Prize of the European Romanesque Center in Merseburg. Finally, he habilitated in Mainz in 2020 with a thesis on ADVERTISING ARCHITECTURE, which examines 20th and 21st century corporate architecture as a medium of communication and identity formation (recently published by Gebr. Mann Verlag).

Not least against the background of the escalating climate crisis and environmental pollution, Hauke Horn founded the architectural office "energiewaende" with a focus on DENA-certified energy consulting and sustainable-energy-efficient refurbishment of existing buildings, which he passionately leads in addition to his scientific projects and tasks. In this context, he is also involved in the training of engineers and craftsmen to become energy consultants.
