Glass slides in a new light
The Forgotten Archive of FB15 – Exhibition Opening on February 2, 2024
2024/01/29
In the slide library of the Department of Architectural and Art History at the Department of Architecture of the Technical University of Darmstadt, there are approximately 60,000 glass slides that were used as teaching aids for the education of architects in the early post-war modern era.

The collection is of great value from both a scientific-historical and media-historical, photo-theoretical, and cultural-political perspective. It is being systematically explored, digitized, and made accessible to the public as part of the project.
The exhibition at the Department of Architecture of TU Darmstadt was created as part of a bachelor seminar in the winter semester of 2023/24. In this seminar, students examined the systematics of the glass slides in the collection, the architectural and art historical canon reflected in them, architectural photographic strategies and practices, as well as technical and theoretical aspects of photography. The goal was to develop an exhibition that focuses on the history of the collection, the technical history of the medium, the glass slide as a teaching tool, and photography as a medium in curatorial practice. Seminar leadership: Dr. Elena Skarke / Department of Architectural and Art History
