We have invited residents, city officials and architects for a discussion on the possibilities of a welcoming architecture („Willkommensarchitektur“) for refugees in Darmstadt. Please join us!

Architectures of Arrival.
The case of Otto-Röhm-Straße Refugee Housing in Darmstadt.
In the summer of 2015, Darmstadt, like many other cities, was faced with the „Summer of Migration“. Since then, the trend of new people seeking refuge in Germany has continued, although at a less intense rate. As of 2016, more than 3,500 refugees lived in Darmstadt, of which 1,769 were in the asylum process. Darmstadt, a city with a housing shortage, was confronted with the acute challenge of housing the new arrivals.
Despite Darmstadt’s official policy on decentralised refugee housing, a temporary housing settlement for up to 924 persons was built in the Otto-Röhm-Straße industrial area in Darmstadt in December 2016. The exhibition presents findings from a research investigating the following questions:
How can we evaluate architecturally the Otto-Röhm-Straße housing? How does it meet the needs of its residents?
How does it inscribe itself within the broader frameworks of housing and integration policy?
How does this housing settlement compare to other refugee housing in Germany and Europe?
What is the experience of refugees in their temporary home?
