| Project Title | 150 Years of Art History at TU Darmstadt |
| Project Description |
Today, TU Darmstadt hosts two professorships in Art History, each embedded in different faculties and supporting distinct degree programs rather than forming a single institute. The older of the two chairs, located in the Faculty of Architecture, looks back on a 150-year history. To mark this anniversary, the research project “150 Years of Art History at TU Darmstadt” undertook, for the first time, a comprehensive historical study of both professorships — examining their research and teaching, their contexts, and their interconnections. Key research questions included: What was taught and when? What were the central research topics? What role did the discipline play in professionally oriented education at a technical university? Project Goals at a Glance: Research and documentation of the history of Art History in Darmstadt Archival work and cataloguing of estates and source materials for future scholarship Strengthening of collaboration between the two Art History professorships in research and teaching Integration of students through research-based learning Public presentation of results via an online platform, a symposium, and a publication A dedicated project website was created to present and archive the results, serving as a resource base for further studies. In the Winter semester 2020/21, the seminar “Art History in Practice – An Interdisciplinary Research Seminar” was held, led by Lisa Beißwanger and Dr. Miriam Oesterreich, with students from Architecture, Education, and Personal Care Studies. The seminar outcomes were incorporated into the project’s online platform. Additionally, an online symposium took place in January 2019, with the presentations later published in a book. |
