Spiegelfabrik – a New Garden City for Mannheim?
The housing shortage in metropolitan areas remains. Hence the pressure on remaining land reserves within inner-city boundaries increases. As a result numerous homogenous and high density urban design concepts are being built. The need to provide for cost-effective housing, the urge for a connection to green space and a sense of community as well as a sustainable urban development are increasingly contradicting each other. Or could the contrast between density and urbanity on one side, and green space, climate and recreation on the other offer new possibilities? The site of the former “Spiegelfabrik” in Mannheim serves us as a testing ground to explore the social, ecological, functional and urban design principles of the historic garden city idea and to what extend we can transfer those ideas into the present day.
