Floating gardens

Exhibition of the Department EuB in Mainz

2023/02/27

On Tuesday, 28 February, the Centre for Building Culture Rhineland-Palatinate in Mainz will open an exhibition of works by students of TUDa that deal with the Middle Rhine Valley World Heritage Site.

As part of a study project in structural engineering under the supervision of Prof. Wolfgang Lorch, students of the department dealt with the design exploration of 70 kilometres of river landscape in the Middle Rhine Valley World Heritage Site. However, the focus was not on the interventions along the riverbanks, but on the use of the water surface. By using discarded excursion boats, push barges and jetties, landscape architectural interventions along the river were explored. The results show innovative ideas for landscape architecture and garden show design in both technical and design terms. In their partly poetic visual language, the designs inspire the dissolution of thought barriers at the interfaces of design and planning disciplines.

The students often used so-called push barges as aids. These barges, actually used as a means of transport for bulk goods, offer a flexible framework for the considerations. The ideas presented range from “quite feasible” to “audaciously visionary”. Visitors can expect a student debate on complex issues relating to the Federal Horticultural Show and its sub-areas. Ideas ranging from a ship's mill to a floating forest have been developed. People will be able to experience the Rhine while walking on mushrooms or bathing.

On the occasion of the opening, we would like to discuss innovation and transformation in landscape architecture. The Zentrum Baukultur cordially invites you to the exhibition opening | Floating Gardens | 28 February 2023, 6.30 p.m. at the Zentrum Baukultur
