DELTA-Forum
Student self-build project on the Lichtwiese campus
2023/11/10
On the experimental area of the DELTA project on the Lichtwiese campus, architecture students are building a wooden structure as a flexibly usable event space under the direction of the Department of Design and Interior Design. The building extends the existing structure of the DELTA sub-projects “Energy Academy” and “Urban Sharing Models” to include an area for events. As a showcase for the urban energy transition, the DELTA real-world laboratory aims to demonstrate that the technically proven potential for increasing energy efficiency and flexibility at district level is economically feasible and socially acceptable.
Over the course of a semester, the students, supported by experts, conceived and detailed a design, procured and tied materials and erected it with the support of the carpentry firm HOLZARCHITEKTUR. At an early stage, the approach of completely dismantling the structure on the one hand and resource-conscious construction on the other was taken into account. For the primary structure, bark beetle-infested trunks were purchased from a nearby forest and, after expert appraisal, were put to a higher-quality use as construction timber. The fabric of the folding frames and the room divider are discarded curtains from an existing building. Prefabricated reinforced concrete elements are used as foundations, which are subsequently used as paving. The extension will be continued in further courses.
