Sustainable urban development solutions for ecological and social challenges

Torsten Becker is a freelance urban planner in Frankfurt am Main and works on various types of urban development projects with his office tobe.STADT. He is particularly interested in urban design and the associated conception of effective planning processes to ensure creative, social and ecological qualities.

Torsten Becker, born in Worms in 1971, studied spatial and environmental planning at the University of Kaiserslautern in the ARUBI department (architecture, spatial and environmental planning and civil engineering) until 1997. After graduating, he worked at AS&P Albert Speer und Partner in the field of urban planning in Hanover and Frankfurt am Main.
Winning an urban planning competition in Augsburg for the former Sheridan barracks in 2001 prompted him to take the plunge into self-employment. Torsten Becker has won prizes and awards in a number of urban planning competitions. Several urban quarters have been realized on the basis of his designs, are currently being realized or are to be realized in the next few years, such as Sheridan Park in Augsburg, Hubland in Würzburg, the Old City Harbour in Oldenburg, Bellevue in Schweinfurt, the Lincoln Quarter in Darmstadt, the Römerwiesen in Hofheim, the north-eastern extension of the Anne Frank Estate in Frankfurt and the Porte de Hollerich Quarter in Luxembourg.
His projects are characterized by the specific approach to the respective task with the aim of creating an identity-creating spatial solution with high design quality. The projects are often worked on in interdisciplinary teams, in particular with architects, landscape architects and engineers.
The deputy professorship covers the current winter semester and the coming summer semester. In the winter semester, Torsten Becker will support the teaching of Department E Urban Planning, in the summer semester 2024 he will edit the Master's thesis in Urban Planning.
