Gran Palazzo

Solo exhibition with works by Katharina Immekus at Kunsthalle Darmstadt from March 17, 2024

Gran Palazzo: The title of Katharina Immekus' exhibition at the Kunsthalle Darmstadt can be used to refer associatively to a large space, “a big thing” or to her interest in our built environment, which is expressed in many of her works. According to her credo, “the key to a good picture, a good house and actually also a good coexistence lies in open, precise and value-free observation.”

The retrospective honors for the first time the outstanding work of the painter and graphic artist in its density and diversity, which has consistently evolved over a period of 25 years. The exhibition presents a selection of about 70 artworks curated by the artist herself. In the art hall illuminated by daylight, Immekus' delicately colorful oil paintings will fully come into effect.

Thanks to some collectors from European countries, several of the large linocuts will also be on display, which dissolve the contrast between objectivity and abstraction. The migration of motifs from one medium to another is comprehensible through the exhibits. Thus, a temporary wall painting will be created specifically for the exhibition in the glass hall of the art hall opened to the city, which picks up a detail from a small oil painting and thus demonstrates the important concept of inter-pictoriality for Immekus' working method.

After its stop at the Kunsthalle Darmstadt, the exhibition will be shown in a slightly modified form at the Museum of Fine Arts Leipzig. Both locations are centers of life and work for Katharina Immekus. Raised in Olpe in the Sauerland region and in Cologne, she studied from 1994 to 2000 at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig, where she co-founded the producer gallery b2 and where her studio is still located today. Since 2015, she has been a professor of Visual Design at the Department of Architecture at the Technical University of Darmstadt, where she created an open exhibition space with the Parkhaus Gallery.
