The Building Transition Begins in Education
Dresden Declaration on a Climate- and Socially Just Building Transition
2024/04/30
With its enormous resource and energy consumption, emissions, and waste, the construction sector is one of the most problematic industries in the context of the climate crisis. At the same time, it harbors the greatest potential for a new, climate-friendly building approach. To harness this potential, the transition must begin in education.

During their conference at TU Dresden on April 26, 2024, the Deans and Department Heads Conference for Architecture, Urban Planning, and Landscape Architecture in the Federal Republic of Germany (DARL) adopted the Dresden Declaration. In it, the scholars support the demand of Architects 4 Future to adapt the curricula of degree programs in line with a building transition.
“We explicitly advocate for critically examining existing course contents and call on all universities, colleges, and academies to review and adapt the curricula of degree programs in the fields of architecture, urban and regional planning, and landscape architecture in line with the building transition. For a responsible approach to planetary boundaries, a holistic building transition is essential.”
The Department of Architecture at TU Darmstadt is a member of DARL. The aim of DARL is to promote science, research, teaching, and continuing education in the mentioned areas. This is achieved by supporting the quality of teaching and research at German universities, promoting high-quality continuing education offerings, and exchanging knowledge among members and other educational institutions.
