Darmstadt Instead of Karstadt
BDA Honorary Membership for TU Emeritus Thomas Sieverts
2024/04/30
TU Emeritus Prof. Dr.-Ing. E.h. Thomas Sieverts was awarded honorary membership of the BDA at the TU Munich on April 24, 2024. With this honor, the BDA recognizes Sieverts' outstanding contributions to the field of urban planning.
“As an architect and urban planner, as an author and educator, Thomas Sieverts identifies and analyzes socially relevant issues that our profession will face in the future. Exemplary of his seismographic work is the groundbreaking publication 'Zwischenstadt. Zwischen Ort und Welt, Raum und Zeit, Stadt und Land' (1997), which is more relevant than ever in light of the challenges of ongoing land consumption and escalating climate change.”
Thomas Sieverts, who celebrates his 90th birthday in June, was a professor of urban planning and settlement studies at the department from 1971 to 1999. In a conversation with Sieverts, Prof. Dr. Annette Rudolph-Cleff reported that he transformed the teaching operation there into a “researching and questioning learning and teaching at an open university” – and incidentally protested against a planned shopping center with the slogan “Darmstadt instead of Karstadt.”
