Exhibition of the Master's theses

of the winter semester 2022/23 at the Faculty of Architecture

2024/07/18

From 17 February to 3 March 20223, more than 70 graduates of the Faculty of Architecture at TU Darmstadt will present their final theses in the fields of structural and urban engineering. The exhibition is open to the public from Monday to Friday.

The following topics were addressed:

The Moabites

Edited by the Department of Design and Building Construction (Prof. Wolfgang Lorch).

The master's thesis “Die Moabiter*innen” deals with the themes of “prison” and “return to society”. A former prison, once a hidden place of horror, is to be transformed into an open, lively residential quarter.

The future question of appropriate density for other forms of housing and how to deal with the transformation into a public space play a central role here. Continuing to build will be one of the dominant future tasks of the coming generation of architects, who will plan less new and even less greenfield. The relevance and topicality of the task are also underlined by its contribution to the climate and social issues.

Exhibition venue: Coopsaal (room 201, 2nd floor)

Opening hours: Mon.-Fri., 8-20 h

The Darmstadt System – Disposal Building in Two Use Sections at the Lichtwiese Campus

Edited by the Department of Design and Interior Design (Prof. Johanna Meyer-Grohbrügge).

The faculty building of the Department of Architecture at the TU Darmstadt is in need of renovation. For the duration of one year at a time, a quarter of the faculty is to move into temporary exile. For this purpose, a building is to be designed in the immediate vicinity, which is to take on a new role as the TU's guest house after the refurbishment, supplemented by flanking offers of a public building for students, teachers and visitors of all kinds. We are looking for an identity for the building in the field of tension between different poles – the advantages and problems of the “Darmstadt building system” as a genius loci, the dimensions of the term “sustainability” in times of climate change and ultimately the possibilities of the building as a field of experimentation – initially for teaching formats and ultimately permanently for living forms of temporary communities.

Exhibition venue: Kleiner Zeichensaal / Room 111

Opening hours: Mon.-Fri., 8am-8pm

Productive (urban) quarter Gutleuthafen

Edited by the Department of Design and Urban Planning (Prof. Dr. Martin Knöll).

Against the background of changing framework conditions and the demand for sustainable urban planning with a stronger mix of uses, the guiding principle of the “productive city” is increasingly becoming the focus of current discussions. New production methods, increasing digitalisation and automation, among other things, open up new possibilities for integrating a small-scale mix of uses into urban space. But current global crises (Corona pandemic, Ukraine war, climate crisis) also make us aware of the need for transformation.

In the confrontation with current economic, ecological and social trends, the students develop visions and alternative urban structures for a new integrated and future-oriented productive quarter.

The aim is to develop sustainable concepts for the transformation of the Gutleuthafen in Frankfurt, which is characterised by trade and industry. These concepts will take into account the unique identity of the location and also produce innovative concepts for a diverse, productive, urban and yet green and climate-friendly quarter.

Exhibition venue: Seminar room at the Department of Design and Urban Planning EUS (4th floor, room 450-459)

Opening hours: Mon.-Fri., 9-17 h
