Anchoring Sustainability in Teaching
A Review of the DGNB University Day at the Department of Architecture
2024/12/09
To spread knowledge about sustainable planning, construction, and operation and to raise awareness of these topics among young professionals from the outset, the DGNB Academy of the German Sustainable Building Council has been collaborating with universities for many years. The goal is to establish sustainability as an integral part of higher education.
On November 15, the DGNB University Day took place once again at the Department of Architecture at TU Darmstadt, organized by the “Design and Building Technology” division under the leadership of Prof. Anett-Maud Joppien, who has also been Vice President of DGNB since 2023 on a voluntary basis.
The focus of the event was on the exchange of best practices, mutual inspiration, and the further development of the partnership between universities and DGNB. The program featured topic-related workshops, Pecha Kucha presentations, a poster session, and networking opportunities. In total, professors and young researchers from 20 universities participated.
The DGNB’s university cooperation now includes more than 100 universities and colleges from Germany and Europe. Disciplines such as architecture, civil engineering, materials science, and others work interdisciplinarily in the field of sustainability. Students have access to a wide range of up-to-date teaching and further education offerings, all available free of charge.
“For us, it was an exceptionally valuable day that provided mutual insights into how DGNB and the topic of sustainability are integrated into higher education across the country. We learned from each other, gathered ideas, and considered how to make teaching even more attractive and practical,” said Felix Jansen, Head of PR, Communication, and Marketing at DGNB.
