1st Prize at the WA Award

Benedikt Benker receives recognition for his design “Danish Density” – a cross-generational housing concept in dialogue with the existing built environment

At this year’s WA Award, Benedikt Benker, a student at Technische Universität Darmstadt, was awarded 1st Prize for his design “Danish Density.” The project makes a remarkable contribution to the ongoing discourse on contemporary urban densification and new housing models for an increasingly aging society. It was supervised by Prof. Felix Waechter, Chair of Design and Building Construction.

The starting point for the design is the Dronningegården block development in central Copenhagen, an urban ensemble by Danish architect Kay Fisker. Benker's proposal aims to densify the existing structure by adding a new residential building in the courtyard, while reinterpreting the idea of the “Green Salon” – an open, communal courtyard layout. The currently used parking area is to be transformed into a green recreational space that contributes to climate adaptation and offers high living quality for residents.

The new building adopts the distinctive formal language of the existing structures and is designed as an elevated bar building spanning the courtyard. A continuous colonnade connects the different areas and makes the outdoor space tangible. The central feature is the so-called “Bel Étage,” a communal floor designed as a gathering place for residents. Above it, various housing typologies are arranged, intentionally reflecting the diversity of modern lifestyles – from small apartments and student or assisted living units to communal housing models.

Constructed using timber, the new building picks up on the structural and proportional characteristics of the existing complex and, with its sandy-hued façade, creates a sensitive architectural link to the original brick tones. The jury particularly praised the thoughtful integration into the urban context, the variety of housing options, and the successful blend of old and new. The design makes a valuable contribution to the question of how sustainable housing can be created with both social and ecological considerations in mind.

The jury emphasized that the project is not only architecturally compelling but also socially relevant, successfully translating the motto

“Old and young bring momentum, old and young provide support” into spatial form.
