| Project Title | WieBauin – Innovative Reuse of Building Materials |
| Acronym | WieBauin |
| Project Description |
The interdisciplinary BMBF research project “WieBauin – Innovative Reuse of Building Materials” develops new approaches and tools to improve the material flow system of construction materials in the Darmstadt/Darmstadt-Dieburg region, aiming to achieve both ecological and economic benefits. The project’s central goal is to increase the reuse of building materials that have already been installed in existing structures, reintegrating them into new construction projects and their surroundings. The Faculty of Architecture contributes to the project through the Department of Design and Urban Development (FG est). During the first project phase, the FG est identified and systematically documented reusable building products from existing buildings in the municipalities of Münster (Hesse) and Otzberg. Building upon this foundation, partner departments from the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodesy conducted a material flow analysis and developed a business model for the regional marketing of suitable reclaimed building products. Additionally, FG est developed a training and education package for property owners, planners, and tradespeople, consisting of: an interactive calculator tool to identify reusable building materials, and a practical handbook supporting property owners, clients, planners, and construction professionals in working with reclaimed materials. With the start of the second project phase in October 2021, FG est became actively involved in the project’s public outreach strategy, supporting training programs for local administrations and providing advisory services for builders, craftspeople, and architects regarding the use of reclaimed building products. |
