| Project Title | emergenCITY – The Resilient Digital City |
| Acronym | EMC |
| Project Description |
emergenCITY is an interdisciplinary collaborative research project involving three universities and a total of 23 departments, complemented by partners from politics, industry, and the Science City of Darmstadt. The project aims to research the resilience of future digital cities, focusing particularly on critical infrastructures and the crucial role of information and communication technologies (ICT). The continuous development and integration of ICT in key sectors — including energy, transport and logistics, healthcare, food supply, water management, finance and insurance, as well as government and public administration — have significantly contributed to and enabled global urbanization through continuous efficiency improvements. At the same time, private households are becoming increasingly permeated by ICT, leading to a growing dependency on these technologies. Against this backdrop — and in light of increasing threats from natural disasters, human or technical failure, and acts of violence or terrorism — it is essential to develop a systematic understanding of the vulnerabilities of digital cities and to identify effective measures for enhancing their resilience. Accordingly, emergenCITY explores fundamental principles, methodologies, and solutions for the realization of so-called “Resilient Digital Cities.” The specific role of the Department of Design and Urban Development (EST) is to pursue a holistic, networked, and integrative approach that combines technical solutions with socio-spatial tools, providing scale-appropriate strategies for individual buildings, neighborhoods, and entire cities. |
