| Project Title | NaTourHuKi – Sustainable Tourism Strategy for the Kinzigtal Region |
| Project Description |
The goal of this transdisciplinary research project is to develop a sustainable tourism strategy for the Kinzigtal landscape corridor, stretching from Hanau to Steinau an der Straße in the Main-Kinzig district. The background for this initiative is the forecasted increase in demand for regional recreational opportunities over the coming decades, driven by population growth in the Rhine-Main metropolitan area and the city of Hanau. The project aims to generate reliable forecasts, identify exploitable potentials, and explore future perspectives for this trend. Already today, the Kinzigtal faces significant conflicts between nature and landscape conservation, traffic load and infrastructure expansion, urban development, agricultural and forestry land use, and recreational needs. This situation calls for a regional, integrative solution, where tourism with a focus on nature-based recreation can serve as a mediating framework to balance competing interests among key regional stakeholders. The project seeks to develop a regionally coordinated sustainable tourism strategy that generates economic value through attractive recreational opportunities while establishing a permanent multi-stakeholder body to support implementation and further development of the strategy. By connecting with the Regionalpark RheinMain and the regional and landscape planning institutions of the Rhine-Main metropolitan area, the project’s results are intended to be transferable to other subregions. |
