Information for first semester students

2023/09/18

Dear freshmen,

We are pleased that you have chosen the B. Sc. degree programme in Architecture or the B. Ed. degree programme in Civil Engineering at the TU Darmstadt and welcome you warmly to the Department of Architecture. With this letter we would like to inform you what to expect in the first days of this exciting new phase of your life, what you should ideally do beforehand and what still has time.

Please read this information carefully!

When does it start?

Your studies will begin with the so-called Orientation Week (O-Week) on Monday, 09 October 2023, 1 p.m. with an introductory event in the Large Lecture Hall of the Architecture Building on the Lichtwiese, L301/93 (opens in new tab) .

Download timetable of the O-Week (opens in new tab) (as of 11.09.23).

The O-week is your first study period, which you should definitely attend because you will receive all the basic information for your further studies here.

Please keep Monday to Thursday completely free during this week and make sure you are here on site during this time. The O-Week is run jointly by the department and the student interest group, known as the Fachschaft.

Do I have to register somewhere beforehand?

Please take care of all formalities such as enrolment, semester fees, health insurance, etc. beforehand. Our department is not responsible for this. All such formalities, as far as they concern the university, are taken care of by the so-called Student Service in the city centre (so-called Karo 5). For more information, see:

Student Service

Do I already have to register online somewhere?

Absolutely! There is a campus management system called TUCaN that will accompany you throughout your further studies at TU Darmstadt – you already know it from your application. You will later register for courses and exams there, and your grades will be managed there, etc. Therefore, you have to activate yourself in the system as soon as possible using the activation link sent to you (more information on this can be found on your enrolment documents). You can do this online, even from home.

Please do this before 9 October. Information at:TUCaN and study organisation

The registration function for courses has deliberately not yet been activated for the Department of Architecture.

Please wait until Monday, 09.10.23 to register for individual courses, then we will explain to you how to do it and what exactly you should do!

Is there already a timetable?

Yes, you can find the timetable on the homepage of the Office of Student Affairs under “Department 15 Architecture > Timetables – Current Semester”. However, it only starts after the orientation week on 16.10. and ends on 09.02.24 (winter semester). You should ensure that you can actually be at the university from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday during the lecture period.

A construction site internship is required – do I have to prove this beforehand?

No, it is also sufficient if you submit the certificate after the start of your studies. Please note, however, that according to your study regulations, which we will present to you in more detail, the certificate must have been submitted by 30.09.2024 at the latest. Nevertheless, it is strongly recommended that you complete at least part of the pre-study internship before the start of your studies: The summer semester break is quite short, and you can only start your 2nd year of study if the proof is available by the end of your first year.

Attention: Required is an internship with six weeks of construction practice, NOT architectural practice!

What is the best way to get to the Lichtwiese?

For your studies, you should try to avoid long commuting times. In this respect, you should find a place to live in Darmstadt or with good transport connections. Not least because of the difficult parking situation, we strongly recommend using public transport or a bicycle.

More detailed information on location and travel

Also important: Ensure digital accessibility!

Please make sure that the student mail address […@stud.tu-darmstadt.de] you receive is actually redirected to your “actual” mail account. This is important because you will receive a lot of information this way in the future. In addition to your student ID card, which you will receive after paying the fee, you will also need your own so-called Athene card, which can be used to access the Mensa, photocopiers, the printing station, etc. You should apply for this card as soon as possible after enrolment. Without this card you will not be able to get food in the Mensa, for example!
